Grocery Shopping
March 30, 2020
We recommend the following practices when planning for and making your trips to the grocery store.
- Create a budget: involve everyone who would be a part of this planning and eating!
- Plan all of your meals for the next two weeks
- Include breakfast, lunch, dinner, and SNACKS!
- Keep a running grocery list on the fridge
- Before you head out to the store plan 2–3 big meals for the week (crock pot, stews, soups, casserole, etc.)
- Plan for leftovers
- Include long term staples on your list: canned vegetables, beans, rice, pasta, and nut butters
- Don’t forget the fruits and vegetables: frozen or canned
- Purchase items that you can freeze: milk, bread, and meat
- Purchase freezable storage containers for some of the aforementioned meals
- Include items that can be recycled (used in multiple dishes)
- Example: whole chicken = lunch sandwiches, chicken tacos, broth (used in soups, stews, etc.)
- Park in the back of the parking lot (avoid the congestion of others)
- When possible use the self-checkout line to increase efficiency and decrease time in the store
- Make it fun and include all members of your household
- Post your daily meals on the fridge: create consistency and open communication
Be patient when waiting in line and keep appropriate distance. And, of course, say thank you to all those working steadily to keep the shelves stocked.
